Rainforest Nations Successful at UN Conference

December 19th, 2005

The Millennila Files is pleased to announce, according Mongabay.com, the Papua New Guinea proposal  presented at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change last December 11th, was well-recieved and agreed to. As settled, this allows for developing nations to finally receive financial compensation for preserving their rainforests. Environmentalists are hopeful this will give developing nations an alternative to destroying or harvesting their rainforests for capital in order to keep their economies going.

Deforestation accounts for 20-25 percent of greenhouse emmissions, not only in terms of the carbon dioxide released during burning, but also the loss of those trees as a mechanism to absorb greenhouse gases in the future. Considering 2005 was the second hottest year since the 1860’s, globally, and the warmest in the Northern Hemisphere, the timing of this strategy could not be better.
