A Mother’s Advice
May 14th, 2006On this Mother’s Day, I think it’s time to face how dire our world has become environmentally and economically. If we are serious about protecting and nurturing Mother Earth, it’s time to dispose of the idea individual actions are enough. I know I have supported personal actions such as purchasing environmentally friendly cars and sources of energy, but the truth of the matter is: unless those who make decisions regarding our national energy a policies share the same values, the most widespread individual actions and trends will be at best a drop in the bucket.
We need to have a voice in policy making. To quote an old Poli-sci professor, Farrell Broslawsky, who I am sure was quoting someone else, “You may not be interested in politics, but politics is definitely interested in you.” Now is not the time for being apolitical, frustrated or apathetic –save that for later if things don’t work out.
If you are serious about creating a cleaner and healthier world for generations to come, I cannot urge you enough to vote in the June primary for candidates at all levels who have made a committment to building a better world, whether it is supporting Universal healthcare, bringing jobs back to America, getting us out of Iraq, making clean energy more accessible, supporting gay rights or finding a way to give undocumented workers (who are already here) a place at the table. Even if you disagree with them on one issue or the other, what they all have in common is a desire to change this deadly status quo.
If we are to regain the quality of life we all enjoyed prior to this administration, we need to find this common ground, and get rid of the bums who have squandered our resources and show no desire to change. Those of you who support a Third-Party movement, please hold that for ‘08. We cannot afford two more years of a Republican majority in either House, in a state legislature, or city council. When in doubt, vote Democrat. If you don’t like what they do for the next two years, THEN you can run a Green, Peace & Freedom, Independent etc. later.
Right now we have to get out of this mess in more ways than one. The life you save may be your own.
