Los Angeles hybrid drivers can keep their change

June 22nd, 2006

The Los Angeles City Council today voted to extend a free metered-parking program for LA hybrid drivers in the city limits to 2008. The program was initiated in 2006 by then-Mayor Hahn as a way of rewarding people who buy energy-efficient vehicles. However, hybrid owners should be mindful of adhering to the posted time limits.

Other than that, if you can find a place, you can have the time. Let’s hope Burbank, Glendale, Santa Monica and other cities follow suit.

As of August 11, 2006 the LADOT web site still says that this program expires 6/30/2006

It’s possible they have not updated the site. I parked my hybrid Downtown LA for 4 hours (in a 10-hour metered zone), without feeding the meter, and did not receive ticket.

I just went to lacity.org, and searched the Council Votes. On June 22, 2006, the council approved item #20, which referred to “free-metered parking.” When I tried to access the text, the server at http://cityclerk.lacity.org was down. Based on this, and the news article linked at the above posting, I would say the program is probably intact until 2008.
