Reading Between the Lines of Bush’s Global Warming Claim

July 9th, 2006

During an interview with Laryy King, President Bush tried to claim he had kept his promise to reduce C02 emissions, despite reducing backing off his campaign pledge shortly after being elected.

“We have done a lot to deal with greenhouse gases by advancing new technologies. … I said we’re going to spend money for clean coal technologies, and we’re in the process of doing that.”

As I have said before: There is no such animal as clean coal. There is a way to burn coal cleaner, but it is still one of the most polluting sources of energy. Burning natural gas is like boiling water and having steam as a by-product. Burning coal is like burning your dinner and ending up with a room full of smoke. Cleaner burning coal means less smoke, but it’s still dirty.

So by saying he is “in the process of solving” global warming by advancing burning clean coal, he is really saying he’s not doing much — more like using a flyswatter to hold back a pit bull. And we all know how effective that is.
