The current rise in gasoline has brought alarm and havoc into many households and families. Not only are people upset at having to pay twice what they used to, to fill up their cars, but they also resent the idea of being held hostage by the Big Five oil companies (Chevron, Shell, Exxon/Mobil, British Petroleum and Conoco Phillips) who currently are collectively bringing in $260,00 a minute.

Fortunately once again, necessity being the mother of invention, has brought forth hope and options in an otherwise bleak world. Left Coast Conversions is a delightful new resource for people who would like to have a green car, but can’t afford the new hybrids, which range in price around from $21K (teeny Insight) to $55K (comfy Lexus),

Founded by Gadget, who you may know from his Discovery Channel show, Big!, Left Coast can convert almost any car from gasoline to 100% electric, and it doesn’t have to be running in perfect condition.  

I heard him on KTLK with Bree Walker last Saturday, when she was also interviewing the distributor of the documentary, Who Killed the Electric Car?

Gadget presently prefers to use old British cars, but is open to just about anything.  The average acceleration rate for his conversions is about  60 mph. in forty seconds, which is not bad. Thanks to improvements in battery technology, he says getting more power is just a matter of time. 

The cost of conversions begins at $17,000 and take anywhere from 3-10 days (once the work has been started) depending on the size of the car. You can even get out that old clunker, that’s been hanging in your garage, backyard or driveway. As long as the body is in good shape, it’s a go for Gadget.
